According to data from the Federal Election Commission, as of October 2018, Cruz had raised a total of $37.3 million while O’Rourke had raised $38.9 million. So where is all this money coming from?
Individual donors make up the vast majority of both candidates’ funding. For Cruz, individual donations account for $28.9 million of his total fundraising, while individual donations make up $33.8 million of O’Rourke’s fundraising. The next biggest source of funding for both candidates is PAC (Political Action Committee) donations. PACs have donated a total of $5.4 million to Cruz and $2.5 million to O’Rourke.
Interestingly, although Ted Cruz has been in office since 2013 and is therefore a sitting senator with all the advantages that come with incumbency, Beto O’Rourke has actually outraised him in overall contributions. This is largely due to O’Rourke’s ability to tap into small-dollar donors; his average contribution is just $33, compared to Cruz’s average contribution of $56.
