Anchorage began loosening restrictions on businesses and gatherings starting on February 5th. Non-essential businesses are now allowed to operate at 25% capacity, while restaurants can open for indoor dining at 50% capacity. Gatherings of up to 10 people are now permitted, both indoors and outdoors. These changes come after a sustained drop in COVID-19 cases in the city; there were just 33 new cases reported on February 4th, the lowest number since November.
The reopening is also thanks in part to the arrival of vaccines. As of February 5th, over 27,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered in Anchorage. The city is working hard to vaccinate as many people as possible; they’ve even set up a mass vaccination site at the Dena’ina Civic & Convention Center which can administer up to 1,000 doses per day.
